The Cinque Terre (Unesco World Heritage) can be reached by train from Chiavari in about 30 minutes. There are boat trips that will allow you to admire the spectacular coastline of the Ligurian Riviera, including the Benedectine Abbey of San Fruttuoso and the famous Portofino bay. Pisa and Florence are easily reached by car or train. Genoa "La Superba" with the largest historical center in Europe, its famous Aquarium and its narrow streets, its marvelous churches and the Palazzi dei Rolli (also UNESCO World Heritage) is only 30 minutes by train from Chiavari. Summary: We used this location as it seemed like a good access point to various towns along the Ligurian coast. The apartment was great but the area is a bit sleepy. Also, no A/C so it was pretty hot. That is very common in Italy though so it's not a complaint. Just be prepared. I think this is a perfect spot if you plan to stay a week or more, want to cook your own meals, and relax.
